09 May 2022/ MEDIA STATEMENT.

We, the Faculty of Medicine Teachers’ Association (FMTA) of University of Colombo strongly condemn the deliberate, organized, irresponsible act of violence targeted at the unarmed, peaceful protesters today, 9 May 2022. This attack is reported to have started near the Temple trees and then proceeded to Galle Face which appears to have been pre-planned by the current political regime.

We would elaborate that all the organizers and instigators of this violent act to be held responsible for the injuries, threat to the lives and damage to the properties.

This situation becomes even more serious in an environment where the government has failed to provide even the essential medical supplies to the general public.

We strongly condemn the attacks on volunteer health workers and the media breaking all international conventions.

In the light of the prevailing situation, we strongly demand the immediate resignation of the President, Prime Minister, and the current government.

We urge the general public to remain calm at this crucial juncture.

Thank you,
Yours sincerely,
Prof Sudharshani Wasalathanthri
President/ FMTA
Dr Chathurie Suraweera
Secretary/ FMT
