Southern and Sabaragamuwa PCs adopt amendments to 13A

Sabaragamuwa and Southern Provincial Councils have approved the Government proposal to amend the 13th Amendment to the Constitution.
The amendments approved relate to doing away with the provision which enabled two or more provinces to amalgamate and rescind the requirement that the consent of all Provincial Councils is necessary for the passage of legislation coming under the purview of Provincial Councils.

In the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council the amendments have been passed by a majority of 17 votes with twenty six members voting for the proposals while nine voting against. Members belonging to the LSSP and the Communist Party have also voted in support of the proposals.

In the Southern Provincial Council the amendments have been approved with a majority of one vote.  Seven UPFA members have voted against it. (niz)
