Uva Election: Ready to Face National Elections -UPFA

[UPFA General Secretary Susil Premjayanth ]

The United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) says it is ready to face a National election with confidence based on the results of all the provincial council elections held in recent times.

UPFA General Secretary Susil Premjayanth said that when combining the votes obtained at provincial elections held over the past couple of years, of all the alliance partners in the Government, the Government has enough votes to win a National election.

There has been speculation a Presidential or General election will be held next year and the opposition is of the view the UPFA has been losing ground as opposed to gaining votes at recent elections, including the just concluded Uva Provincial Council election.

However Premjayanth noted that two alliance members of the UPFA, namely the National Freedom Front and the Democratic Unity Alliance had contested separately in the Badulla District and when their votes are also counted the UPFA is in a strong position on the number of votes.

He said that the UPFA has secured nearly 58 percent of votes from all the provincial council elections held over the past couple of years and so it is ready to face a National election. (Colombo Gazette)
