The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has granted leave to proceed with the Fundamental Rights petition case (SC FR 312/22) under articles 11, 12(1), 13(1), and 13(2) of the constitution.
The petition alleges that Deshabandu Tennekoon, the current acting Inspector General of Police, and other respondents subjected a lawyer to torture and degrading treatment. The lawyer intervened to stop the police from assaulting an individual on the road.
The Supreme Court bench is composed of Justices Yasantha Kodagoda, Kumudini Wickremesinghe, and Priyantha Fernando.
