BASL condemns army assault on judge

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka yesterday condemned the assault on the District Judge of Matara by army personnel on Sunday (22).
The BASL called upon the IGP and the Commander of Army to bring those suspected of having participated in the assault before the Law.
It urged the Secretary to the Ministry of Defense and the Commander of the Army to immediately take stern disciplinary action against the military personnel concerned, a press statement issued by the BASL said.

Full text of the BASL statement: “The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has been informed of an incident concerning an assault on the District Judge of Matara by army personal on the 22nd of May 2011. The BASL strongly condemns this act of assault on a judicial officer which it perceives as a serious affront to the dignity of holders of judicial office and as an act calculated to bring disrepute to the judiciary. It therefore takes very serious note of this incident and strongly urges the authorities concerned to ensure that judicial officers are properly and adequately safeguarded from such acts of misconduct which affect the functioning and dignity of the judiciary.
