Due to failure on the part of the CMC, the government has placed the Viharamahadevi Park under the supervision of the Navy. Sources say the SLN recently moved in following a directive given by the Defence Ministry following a spate of complaints against the CMC.

Sources alleged that for want of supervision at high level, those responsible for maintaining the park hadn’t maintained the primary recreational facility available to city dwellers.

With the Navy assuming responsibility for maintenance, every thing is conducted in military precision.

Sources said that dilapidated buildings in the park would be demolished.

During the then President Chandrika Kumaratunga, the park had been under the Urban Development Authority. Sources said that as the UDA had been now placed under the Defence Ministry, swift action could be taken on complaints and remedial action taken.
