New York, NY
Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) announced that it will take steps to counter Sri Lankan government’s plans to organize several activities against the UN Panel Report on Sri Lanka. The leaked report was published in the news paper The Island.
TGTE will set up an expert panel to study the Sri Lanka’s anti-UN report and to produce a counter-report challenging Sri Lankan government’s findings. It will meet different Government’s to counter Sri Lankan government’s propaganda against the UN report. It will also campaign for the UN to refer Sri Lanka to the International Criminal Court’s Prosecutor as well to organize an international commission of Inquiry as suggested by the report.
According to Sri Lanka’s Sunday Times news paper, the Sri Lankan government is creating a panel to review the UN report and produce a white paper to counter the findings on the UN report and to brief countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America to solicit support for Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse has urged his supporters to rally on May 1 st for an anti-UN rally in the capital Colombo.
This UN report corroborates what TGTE and others have been saying all along about the mass killing of Tamils. The report explicitly mentions war crimes and crimes against humanity. Sri Lankan government’s publicity stunt to white wash the Tamil killings has failed by the publication of this report said TGTE.
The report highlights rape, summary execution, enforced disappearances, widespread shelling, denial of food, and medicine and government’s attempts to intimidate and silence media. The Sri Lankan government’s Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) also came under strong criticism in this report. “LLRC is deeply flawed, does not meet international standards for an effective accountability mechanism….” said the report.
Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE) is a democratically elected body of the Tamil diaspora. It held elections in twelve countries to elect Members of Parliament. It drafted and adopted a Constitution, elected a Prime Minister, Speaker and a ten member Cabinet.
