Sri Lanka: Notorious Rajapaksa family out of parliamentary politics

The Rajapaksa family has decided not to contest the upcoming 2024 General Election.

Former Presidents Mahinda and Gotabaya Rajapaksa and former MPs Basil and Chamal Rajapaksa will, thereby, not contest the Parliamentary Election.

However, it is reported that former minister Namal Rajapaksa will lead the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna’s (SLPP) election campaign and will be a National List nominee.

The 2024 General Election is scheduled for 14 November. (Newswire)

The absence of the Rajapaksas, Ranil, Patali, Wimal, Bandula, & many others feels like the beginning of #SystemChangeLK.

This milestone is a direct result of the Aragalaya, where the people finally built a power center stronger than any politician or party. It’s a powerful reminder that the authority of leaders comes from the people, & the people can take it away.

This is the beauty of true democracy & an engaged citizenry. While we are far from the type of governance we deserve, this is the moment to rebuild trust, particularly in the areas of transparency & accountability.
