(Ekneligida was questioned about “family tree” publication and his alleged affiliations with Sarath Fonseka)

The Criminal Investigation Department’s investigations into the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda made a vital breakthrough with the Sergeant Major who was arrested by the Police on Sunday confessing that he interrogated Eknaligoda at the Girithale Army camp.

The Sergeant Major believed to have been involved in the mysterious abduction of journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda was taken into custody at Kurunegala on Sunday.

The officer, who was attached to the Army intelligence unit,

had said he questioned Eknaligoda on a publication titled “the family tree” (pawul gaha) and his alleged affiliations with former Army Commander Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, who was then the Common Candidate of the opposition. He had said a senior Army officer (a Major) who was at the Girithale camp took Eknaligoda away after interrogation, saying the journalist had to “go somewhere” (gamanak yanne thiyenawa) The officer had told the CID that he did not receive any news about Eknaligoda thereafter.

The development had taken place three days after his abduction in Rajagiriya, CID sources said. Eknaligoda was kidnapped two days before the Presidential election in 2010. According to the Seargent Major, a Colonel attached to the Girithale Army Camp was also aware of Eknaligoda’s fate. Highly placed Police sources told the Daily News that the CID are conducting investigations to arrest the two Army officers.

Two former LTTE cadres were taken into custody by the CID several days ago over the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda who went missing in 2010.

The suspects arrested from Vavuniya had been identified as Kanapathipillai Suresh alias Satya Master and Sumathipalan Suresh alias Nagulan, the Police sources said.
