Sajith hits out at US-resolution

The US- resolution on Sri Lanka filed at the UN Human Rights Council is a violation of the UN charter and an infringement of internal affairs of a country, UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa said yesterday.

 Sharing his views on the Geneva resolution with the Daily Mirror, Mr. Premadasa said it violated article 2.4 of the UN Charter which said that all members of the UN should refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any other manner inconsistent with the Purposes of the United Nations.

 “Those countries that accuse Sri Lanka of violating human rights should look through a mirror and see to themselves the crimes that have been committed by their own armed forces,” the UNP Deputy Leader said.

 He said all people in Sri Lanka should come together in countering this move irrespective of political, religious or communal differences.

 However, he said it is the present government that had left room for the international community to act against Sri Lanka. Mr. Premadasa said the Sri Lankan government had missed a wonderful opportunity it had to put in place a reconstruction, rehabilitation plan for the North and to bring about reconciliation.
