Vehemently opposing the widespread military land grabs and forceful occupation, Northern Provincial Council (NPC) on Thursday passed a unanimous resolution, demanding President Mahinda Rajapaksa to vacate the military from all private lands and buildings in the North before the end of this year.
The resolution was passed unanimously at a special session presided over by Northern Provincial Council Chairman C.V.K Sivagnanam on Thursday. According to reports from the Northern Jaffna peninsula, members of the Council’s main opposition party have neither supported nor opposed the resolution.
The four-party Tamil National Alliance (TNA) won the maiden Provincial council poll last year with an absolute majority and retired Supreme Court Judge C.V. Wigneswaran was elected as the Chief Minister. And President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s ruling coalition became the main opposition party of the council.
Speaking at the special session, the members of the TNA kept producing the documentary and photographic evidences of the enormous military presence and forceful acquisition of private lands and properties in the North, even five years after the end of war. The NPC resolution has also demanded the President and his government to do the needful to implement the 13th Amendment to the Constitution and duly devolve the land powers to the Provincial Council.
Although the international community at large has been demanding for the demilitarisation of the North and the East, the Colombo regime is adamantly maintaining a huge military presence in the island’s north and the east, which have been the traditional homeland for the minority Tamils.
