North-East people call for immediate access to essential medicines and medical equipment

In a letter to president Wickremasinghe North East Women’s Forum has requested to provide the essential drugs  and medical devices urgently to the affected people of North & East and other parts of the Island.

The letter:

A public request to His Excellency the  President of Sri Lanka and the Government of Sri Lanka

His Excellency the President,

Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka,

Presidential Secretariat, Colombo-01

Facilitate immediate access to essential medicines and medical equipment to the affected people

We, the affected Tamil, Sinhalese, Muslim people, women’s networks, civil society organizations and social activists in the north & eastern provinces of Sri Lanka hereby submit the following humble request to you.

The people of the North & Eastern provinces have the right to visit the Government  hospitals for treatment, ranging from minor ailments to major surgeries. Especially when people visit to  hospitals, only very few essential medicines are available  in the hospitals.

The non-availability of these essential medicines and medical devices has affected the life of all the people. Especially the people of the Northern-Eastern provinces , women and girls are badly affected .

We are forced to pay large some of money for the  medicines to private pharmacies or private hospitals. Apart from this, the availability of drugs for dogs, cats and snake bites are also limited in the Government hospitals. When the  patients are admitted for surgical procedures, due to lack of proper access of medical equipment, there is a situation where they cannot be performed in time.

Apart from that,  in terms of  the study conducted by the World Health Organization, especially on Sri Lanka, more children are identified as malnourished, and if these children  are not taken care, the future of our children will be  unhealthy, and this indicates that the future stable life of our Sri Lankan people is questionable. This has badly  affected the grass root people and also the middle class,  who are living in  the border villages.

Therefore, we urge you &  the Government of Sri Lanka, to provide the essential drugs  and medical devices urgently to the affected people of North & East and other parts of the Island.
