MEP condemns advisory document

The Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) issuing a press release yesterday condemned the advisory document of the UN General Secretary’s expert panel.

The release said: “The Mahajana Eksath Peramuna is of the view that the advisory document of the so called expert panel comprising three persons is entirely a result of personal exercise on the part of United Nations’ General Secretary Ban Ki-moon.

“It is in no way related to the United Nations. Any attempt to give this advice a UN flavour is mischievous and derogatory of the UN itself. It is inconceivable that a person of Ban Ki-moon’s standing could have condescended himself to releasing the document by publicizing it through his office.

“The Mahajana Eksath Peramuna condemns the document and treats it with the contempt that it deserves. The advisory document which has been published is false and malicious and suggestive of a treacherous exercise of the part of divisive LTTE fellow travellers. The utterances of some of these fellow travellers in the USA few days prior to this led to the inference that they have obtained foreknowledge of this report.

“Ban Ki-moon has deliberately suppressed one important fact namely that pursuant to the September 11, terrorist attack on twin towers that the United Nations passed a resolution giving mandate for the elimination of terrorism by all member countries. Sri Lanka successfully carried the humanitarian effort in defeating LTTE terrorism which had also been banned in many countries.

“In the final stages of the humanitarian efforts there was a mass exodus of escapees (nearly 300,000) from LTTE brutality, unprecedented in hitherto recorded history. They were provided with all facilities and protection by the Government. This laudable humanitarian exercise has been given a malicious and perverted twist in this document.

“Behind the facade of this so called document there appears a sinister move to fault the Head of State our President in an International Forum.

“This written advice is neither apart of UN deliberations nor a product of any specialized committee of the UN. It is pertinent to recall the memory of Ban Ki-moon to the fact that the United Nations Committee on Human Rights in Geneva had unequivocally rejected a resolution that was moved against Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the conclusion of the humanitarian efforts in Sri Lanka.

“This exercise lays bare the attempt to reintroduce Western hegemony and imperialist control over emerging sovereign nations which has thrown away shackles of colonialism and rejected imperialist overtures.

“Having defeated LTTE terrorists and fellow travellers President Mahinda Rajapaksa with assistance of all democratic and patriotic forces ushered-in an era of peace, ensured the right to liberty and right to life of all communities including Sinhala, Tamil, Muslim, Burghers and Malays.

“Sri Lanka is consolidating this position by reconciliation, reconstruction and development, in all fronts for lasting peace and amity among all sections of the country.”
