Katunayake savage police attack – fundamental rights petition to be heard

The fundamental rights petition filed before the Supreme Court by 13 employees of Katunayake Free Trade Zone claiming their fundamental rights were violated when police attacked the peaceful agitation carried out by the employees against a fraudulent pension scheme the government attempted to force on private sector employees will be heard.

The Supreme Court took this decision yesterday (5th). The OIC’s of Katunayake, Seeduwa and Negombo police stations, former IGP Mahinda Balasooriya, the IGP N.K. Illangakone, the Board of Investments (BOI), the Attorney General and the Army Commander have been named as respondents. The Supreme Court has accepted names of all except that of Army Commander.

Roshen Chanaka, an employee of the Katunayake Free Trade Zone was killed when police shot at the agitation and later the police broke into factories in the zone and carried out a savage attack on the employees. The fundamental rights petition is regarding this inhuman attack.
