Junior officers barred from carrying firearms when meeting their seniors

Gayan Kumara Weerasingha
The Police Department is to issue a communique shortly instructing all junior cadres to refrain from carrying firearms on their person when they meet senior police officers.

This is consequent to a recent shooting that took place at Maha Oya, where Chief Inspector Jayathilaka shot his superior ASP Sisira Kumara, before shooting himself.

“When junior officers have to meet senior officers they should not carry firearms. This is clearly stipulated in the laws and regulations concerning the police force and is not a new rule that is being implemented,” said

DIG Gamini Navarathna who is in charge of administration at the Police Department.
“Even when entering the Police Department one has to do so sans firearms,” he explained.
