JHU awaiting implementation of mosque removal order

The JHU, a key partner in the UPFA government, says it is keeping a close watch over whether the order by prime minister D.M. Jayaratne for the removal of a mosque in the Dambulla sacred area is implemented.

In a statement, JHU leader Ven. Omalpe Sobhitha Thera says certain politicians and others have made statements, challenging the premier’s order.

The Buddhist clergy and the laity are awaiting to see the removal of the unauthorised construction.

Instead of correcting the mistake by removing the mosque, those representing the Muslim community are acting on impulse and in an extremist manner, alleges the statement.

Noting there is no religious clash involved, the JHU says attempts to cover up the truth in order to appease one party will have serious repercussions.

It adds that the government has an inalienable responsibility through the constitution to nurture and safeguard Buddhism.
