An inquiry is to be conducted into allegations that the SLMC has taken a stand contrary to the UPFA government’s policy on national issues, during the ongoing campaign for the Eastern Provincial Council Election.
Media Minster Keheliya Rambukwella, responding to a question at the Cabinet press briefing in Colombo yesterday, said that the SLMC, despite being a constituent member of the government, was making statements violating the principle of collective responsibility and the allegation would be inquired into.
One was presumed innocent until proven guilty. So, an inquiry would have to be held to ascertain the truth or otherwise of the accusation being levelled, Minister Rambukwella said, adding that political parties were in the habit of making various comments during an election campaign.
The SLMC is contesting the Sept. 8, Eastern Provincial Council polls under its Tree symbol while it is supporting the UPFA in the North Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces.
Commenting on the proposed Rangiri Dambulla sacred area project, Rambukwella said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa had directed the authorities to complete it soon.
Asked about the Z-Score issue, which has left students who have passed the Advanced Level Examination in a confused state with regard to university admission, the Cabinet Spokesman said that the President would ensure that no injustice was done to any of the students.
