Information on detainees under Prevention of Terrorism Act in Sri Lanka released

In July 2021 former member of The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka Ambika Satkunanathan filed a RTI request to Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) for statistics on number of persons in remand and on detention orders for offences re to LTTE and the Easter Sunday attacks. After a long process  on 26 Oct 2022 Right To Information Commission ordered the requested information  to be released.

According to Aug 2021 Department of Prisons statistics, persons convicted for LTTE related offences were 24, in remand 85.

For Easter attacks 205 persons were in remand. Total number remanded under PTA at the time were 298.

There are discrepancies in stats. Also since then many have been released on bail.

Number of trials in progress for offences connected to LTTE are 34.
Number of indictments/trials in progress for offences connected to Easter Sunday bombings are 34.
Number of files under review by AG for offences re to LTTE were 37. Number of files under review by AG for offences re to Easter Sunday bombings were 176.
