High-powered confab want NGO’s out of schools

Politicians, education officers and school principals who met in Talawakele today to discuss the measures that should be taken to safeguard school children in the wake of a bad case of food poisoning which left nearly 500 school-children sick and in need of medical attention on Sunday (16), had decided not to allow any NGO to hold functions in schools in the future.
It was reported that the incident had taken place at a function organised by an NGO to celebrate Universal Children’s Day.

The Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) said that it’s Secretary, Minister of Livestock Development Arumugam Thondaman, who chaired the meeting had proposed this suggestion.

Following this suggestion, it had been decided that school principals should be made to obtain permission from the local education authorities before holding such functions with outsiders being present.

It had been decided to get the food served at school functions examined by the public health officers. It was also decided to keep a close watch on functions taking place in schools. (Yohan Perera)
