Dr. Shafi Sihabdeen cleared of all charges levelled by alt Buddhists: Here are the main culprits

Dr. Shafi Sihabdeen has been acquitted of all charges, clearing his name after enduring years of unfounded accusations. This victory is personal for him and his family, but it also underscores the need to examine those who spread racist, anti-Islamic hate.

Let’s look at the culprits and where they are now.

In 2019, Dr. Shafi was falsely accused of sterilizing 4,000 Sinhalese mothers, a baseless claim that inflamed communal hate. These accusations were championed by key political figures, media outlets, and public personalities, leading to a dangerous wave of mistrust and hostility.

1. Dr. Sarath Weerabandara: Then-Director of Kurunegala Hospital, who actively encouraged complaints without evidence, inciting national hysteria.

2. Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera: Buddhist monk and MP who publicly called for investigations and promoted the false narrative.

3. Dr. Channa Jayasumana: Used his social media to amplify these baseless accusations, spreading misinformation.

4. Wimal Weerawansa and Udaya Gammanpila also publicly called for investigations.

5. Iraj Weeraratne used his platform to fan the flames, adding to the frenzy.

Media played a major role, with Divaina newspaper, through Hemantha Randunu, publishing the initial story accusing Dr. Shafi. Derana TV, owned by Dilith Jayaweera, repeated these false claims widely, sowing distrust and fear.

Honorable mentions include Pathum Kerner, who actively promoted these allegations, and the Bodu Bala Sena.

CID investigations later found all allegations to be baseless, no evidence of unauthorized sterilizations. Yet, those who spread these lies faced minimal consequences. Their actions left lasting damage, not only to Dr. Shafi but to social harmony.

Fast forward to 2024: Many of these figures are now in a new political alliance, Sarvajana Balaya, for the upcoming elections. This coalition includes Dilith Jayaweera, Wimal Weerawansa, Udaya Gammanpila, and Channa Jayasumana, united under a common platform once again. All the racists in one neat package, seeking political power. Dr. Shafi’s acquittal serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of unchecked, divisive rhetoric.

Sri Lanka deserves accountability, and I hope that Dr. Shafi and those who represent him now pushes for damages against those who manipulate public fear for political gain.
