CJ Mohan Peiris Given 48 Hour Deadline To Step Down

[Go Home, Mohan Peiris!]

A group of lawyers are now protesting at Hulftsdorp demanding Chief Justice Mohan Peiris to step down from office immediately.

They assert that Peiris was elevated to the CJ post in a flawed and unconstitutional manner following the “impeachment” of 43rd Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake.

The protesting lawyers also demanded the new government to reinstate former CJ Shirani Bandaranayake, adding that they would give 48 hours to the Chief Justice to step down from his position.

It is learnt that Chief Justice Mohan Peiris would not go to Supreme Court today due to protests. Sources close to him told Asian Mirror that the Chief Justice Peiris has not made any decision so far to resign from office.

The 100 day programme presented by President Maithripala Sirisena state that his new government will reinstate former Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake who was impeached by former President Rajapaksa’s government.

Showing his inclination to reinstate Bandaranayake, President Sirisena took oaths on Friday before Supreme Court Justice K. Sri Pawan who is presently the senior-most judge in the Supreme Court.
