Central, NWP in UPFA hands;TNA sweeps the NPC polls;DP now the “third force”; UNP vote base reduced to 20%

Ruling UPFA  won Central and North Western Provinces handsomely while main opposition UNP reduced to 20 -30% votes, TNA obtained 3/4th of seats in the Northern Provincial council, Former Army Commander Saratha Fonseka’s party became third political force in the South pushing the Sinhala Nationalist JVP to Forth place.


 Central, NWP in UPFA hands

The United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA), which lost the Northern Provincial Council polls to the Tamil National Alliance, won the elections for the Central and North Western Provinces (NWP).

Results released by the Department of Elections showed that the UPFA had secured 36 seats in the Central province while the UNP, which came second, got 16 seats.

In the North Western Province the UPFA got 34 seats and the UNP 12 seats. The Democratic Party led by Sarath Fonseka received 3 seats in the North Western Province and 2 in the Central province.

TNA sweeps the NPC polls
   
The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) which contested the Northern Provincial Council (NPC) elections as the Illangai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) under the house symbol, swept to victory securing over a 2/3rds majority of the votes in the North, results showed today.

The party led by R. Sampanthan with former Supreme Court judge C.V Wigneswaran as the Chief Ministerial candidate, secured 30 of the 38 seats for the newly formed council while the ruling UPFA got 7 seats and the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress 1 seat.

In the Jaffna district, ITAK won 84.37 percent of the votes while the UPFA was a distant second with just 14.20 percent of the votes. A total of 273, 821 people voted in the Jaffna District.

In the former LTTE controlled Kilinochchi district ITAK won 81.57 percent of the total votes while the UPFA managed just 17.37 percent of the votes.

Elsewhere, ITAK won 62.22 percent of the votes in Mannar, 66.10 percent of the votes in Vavuniya and 78.56 percent of the votes in Mullaitivu.

DP now the “third force”

The Democratic Party (DP) led by former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka said it was now the “third force” in Sri Lankan politics.

Democratic Party parliamentarian Jayantha Ketagoda said that the party will now look at taking their political policies further.

The Democratic Party received 3 seats in the North Western Province and 2 in the Central provincial council elections held yesterday and pushed the JVP down the list.

Ketagoda told the Colombo Gazette that the DP was satisfied with the outcome of the polls and showed that the people clearly wanted an alternative force
