BASL Files Writ Application Seeking Order Against Political Hoardings

Treasurer of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, Upul Deshapriya, Attorney-at-Law and a few other officers bearers of the BASL, yesterday filed a Writ Application in the Court of Appeals seeking to obtain a mandatory order on the Mayors of Kotte and Dehiwela-Mt. Lavinia Municipal Councils, to prevent the display of hoardings and posters which carried pictures of candidates at the upcoming presidential election.

The petitions said the display of election related posters violated section 74 of the Presidential Election Act No. 15 of 1981 and hence could be prohibited by an order of the Court.

Among the petitioners are Rajindh Perera, Attorney-at-law, Assistant Secretary of the Bar Association and Priyantha Gamage Attorney-at-law Convenor, Rule of law committee of the BASL. Among the respondents are the Mayors of Kotte, and Dehiwela-Mt. Lavinia and the Commissioner of Elections. The Writ Application will be supported in Court on December 13, 2014, by Counsel Upul Jayasuriya, the President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka.
