Ban Ki Moon & Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein to Visit Sri Lanka Early 2016

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon and UNHRC Commissioner Prince Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein are scheduled to visit the country in February next year reports state owned Sunday Observer.

Sri Lanka government  invited UNHRC Commissioner  Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein to visit Sri Lanka  as soon as he was appointed to the post. Later through Sri Lanka Foreign Minister Samaraweera the invitation was renewed by the new government.

His visit to Sri Lanka on the card for some time now.

The state owned Sunday Observer says that the visit marks a definite turn in the relationship between Sri Lanka and the UN which was soured during the latter stages of the Rajapaksa government.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon last visited Sri Lanka in May 2009, following the conclusion of the armed offensive in the North. The  joint statement by the then government and the UN  that was issued following the three-day visit led to number of UN interventions with regard to alleged serious human rights violation during the last phase of the war.
