The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has expressed grave concern over remarks made by the President at the recent May Day Rally, referring to a judicial decision due to be delivered on 25 May 2026, in which he stated that the audience would be able to applaud the decision upon its delivery.
In a statement issued in this regard, the BASL noted that the tenor of the President’s remarks is open to the suggestion of interference with the judicial process. As such, the Association apprehends that these comments may erode public confidence in the independence of the judiciary. [adaderana.lk]
The BASL emphasised that judicial independence is not merely an institutional safeguard, but a fundamental principle essential to preserving individual dignity, upholding the rule of law, and sustaining the moral authority of a democratic society.
The Association further recalled that in the past, whenever the independence of the judiciary has been threatened—whether by the executive or by any other quarter—the BASL and its members throughout the country have resolutely opposed such interference.
Reaffirming its position, the BASL stated that it remains committed to ensuring that the independence and integrity of the judiciary are protected and safeguarded at all times. The Association pledged to take all necessary steps in furtherance of this objective, in the interests of democracy, the rule of law, and the protection of the Constitution.
The BASL reiterated that an independent judiciary stands as the bedrock of a vibrant and enduring democracy, safeguarding the rule of law and ensuring that justice is administered without fear or favour.
The Association also drew attention to the Preamble of the Constitution of Sri Lanka, which recognises the independence of the judiciary as part of the intangible heritage that guarantees the dignity and well-being of future generations. In this context, the BASL affirmed that it will continue to oppose any interference with the independent judicial process in Sri Lanka.
