The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has formally urged the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Priyantha Weerasooriya, to expedite investigations and ensure accountability following a serious incident that unfolded outside the Nugegoda Court Complex on 30 January.
In a letter signed by BASL President Rajeev Amarasuriya and Secretary Chathura A. Galhena, the Association expressed appreciation for the police’s prompt response in controlling the unruly behavior of individuals involved. However, it voiced concern that the perpetrators have yet to be arrested or brought before the courts.
The BASL emphasized that the incident poses a direct threat to the professional duties of Attorneys-at-Law and undermines the due process of the judiciary. “Such conduct sets a dangerous precedent and directly erodes the administration of justice in the country,” the letter stated.
Calling for a thorough investigation and early reporting of facts to the Magistrate’s Court, the BASL reiterated the importance of safeguarding lawyers’ rights to represent clients without intimidation or obstruction.
The Association’s leadership also stressed that ensuring the safety and independence of legal professionals is essential to upholding the rule of law and maintaining public confidence in the justice system.
