The apex court set the date to January 24, 2012 to hear the fundamental rights petition.
The court said the petition would be heard next year since the Supreme Court bench to hear the case has not been completed.
The petition was to be heard before a three-judge bench and Justices R. K. S. Suresh Chandra and Sathya Hettige have decided to postpone the hearing.
The local media right organization, Free Media Movement (FMM) has initiated legal action against the Sri Lankan government’s blocking of several websites allegedly containing slanderous material against the government and the people.
The blocked sites are www.lankaenews.com, srilankamirror.com, srilankaguardian.com, paparasinews.com, gossip9.com and www.lankawaynews.com.
Deputy Solicitor General Shavindra Fernando appearing for the Attorney General has raised objections saying that the FMM did not have any legal basis.
However, the Supreme Court has ordered the petition to be heard in January.
