One in Four Sri Lankans Screened in 2025 Crime Crackdown

(Sri Lanka Brief/ 23 September 25)  In a sweeping nationwide effort to suppress crime and drug activity, Sri Lanka Police have screened over 5.1 million individuals so far this year—nearly one-fourth of the country’s population, according to Police Media Spokesperson ASP Udaya Kumara Wutler.

The figure, based on data from crime suppression operations supported by the tri-forces, represents more than 23% of the national population, which stands at approximately 22 million. These checks have led to:

  • 104,000 arrests on suspicion
  • 4,630 suspects linked to serious crimes, including rape, theft, fraud, and robbery
  • 76,374 arrests on outstanding warrants, including 45,490 day warrants and 11,111 open warrants

ASP Wutler emphasized the scale of the operation at a media briefing held on September 20, noting that the crackdown reflects an unprecedented level of law enforcement engagement across the island.

Over 28,000 Screened in Islandwide Special Operation

On 20 September, police conducted a nationwide special operation under the directive of the Inspector General of Police, focusing on crime and drug prevention. The operation covered all divisional-level police stations and resulted in:

  • 28,372 individuals screened
  • 714 suspects arrested
  • 253 individuals apprehended on outstanding warrants
  • 19 suspects directly linked to criminal cases identified
  • 23 arrests for reckless driving
  • 4,495 traffic violations recorded

Police Recover 1,721 Illegal Firearms Amid Nationwide Crime Crackdown

Sri Lanka Police have recovered 1,721 illegal firearms so far this year through intensified operations targeting organized crime and drug-related violence, according to Police Media Spokesperson Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Udaya Kumara Wutler.

Among the seized weapons are 61 T-56 assault rifles, 62 pistols, and 40 revolvers. ASP Wutler noted that many of these firearms were either locally manufactured or imported, with some reportedly sourced from military camps and northern regions. He also indicated that certain weapons may have been rented out for criminal activities.

In connection with shootings linked to gang violence, police have arrested 38 gunmen, 27 motorcycle riders who transported them, and 263 individuals who aided and abetted these crimes.
