The government has decided to appoint a committee to amend and maintain the Cyber Security Act, No. 09 of 2024 in a new form.
NPP government promised to abolish the act altogether during the presidential election and has changed that position now.
The Cabinet had earlier approved the amendment of the Cyber Security Act at the Cabinet meeting held on the 9th of February.
Accordingly, recommendations are to be submitted to amend the said Act by incorporating the amendments currently identified.
The Minister of Health and Mass Media, the Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs, and the Minister of Justice and National Integration has submitted a Cabinet paper for this effect .
In this regard, the Cabinet has agreed to appoint a committee representing the relevant sectors under the chairmanship of an Judge of the Supreme Court.
Meanwhile, Member of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake has submitted a Private Member’s Bill to repeal the Cybersecurity Act.
