Encounter killings by the police are not the solution to prevent crime. – Saliya Peiris, PC

Encounter killings by the police are not the solution to prevent crime. Killing suspects in custody destroys evidence against those who mastermind the crime.

It also makes criminals of police officers involved in these killings. These incidents come back years later to haunt the very same police officers.

I have seen police officers being charged in courts years after these incidents have occurred resulting in their lives and those of their families being destroyed.

For years the Supreme Court has condemned custodial deaths and encounter killings by the State. Under whatever Government extra-judicial killings must not be permitted. Fighting crime will succeed only by adherence to the rule of law.

Secretary of the BASL Rajeev  Amarasuriya has posted following note on his FB page.

Killing of Suspects in Police Custody cannot and should not happen. Such deaths are an affront to the Rule of Law and will tarnish the image of Sri Lanka.

The following is a Statement issued by the BASL under my signature on 26/11/2021, that was a situation where there was also forewarning.

Today at the Bar Council this matter was discussed in detail and necessary steps will be taken.
