He told a news conference in Colombo that the LLRC has referred to human rights violations on the part of the Mahinda Rajapaksa regime as well and it was high time mistakes were admitted and appropriate action taken to prevent any further foreign interference in Sri Lanka’s affairs.
The LLRC Report has to a great extent endorsed the findings of the Experts Panel Report commissioned by the UN Secretary General Ban ki Moon and the government has had to eat its own words which included branding the UNP as traitors for having spoken the truth, Kiriella observed.
He said that the country’s good name was being tarnished due to the Rajapaksa regime’s continued refusal to implement the law, admit its mistakes and permit democratic rights including media freedom to flourish.
The LLRC Report has also proved the UNP right, in opposing the abolition of the 17th Amendment to the Constitution, which had provided for the establishment of Independent Police, Public Service, Elections and Bribery and Corruption Commissions, which are vital to enforce the rule of law and establish good governance, Kiriella said.
Citing an example, he said that the LLRC had also called for the depoliticisation of the police, which has time and again been prevented from enforcing the law due to governmental interference.
