The key suspect in the murder of a woman and her daughter at Kotakethana is L.M. Dharmasiri, a Godakawela Pradeshiya Sabha member and coordinating secretary to minister John Seneviratne.
The suspect has fled the area and is now in hiding, police said, adding that the CID is looking for him following confessions made by other suspects in custody.
To protest the double murder, people set fire to the homes of four suspects, including that of the PS member, and also burnt tyres on the road.
His relatives too, have fled the area.
Fifty-two-year-old Nayana Nilmini and her daughter, Kavindya Chaturangi, aged 18 years, were found murdered in their home on February 01.
The arrested suspects have confessed to having entered the house and killed the mother, after which they had dragged the girl into a nearby jungle area, raped her and murdered her as well.
Meanwhile, police spokesman SP Ajith Rohana told ‘Hiru FM’ today that no arrests have so far been made in connection with the double murder.
He said only statements have been obtained from several persons.
However, IGP N.K. Illangakoon has told ‘Divaina’ that police were interrogating arrested suspects, who have divulged important information.
