55-year-old S.Vijendran a village officer to the Iluppaikadavai area in Mannar, was killed in a mysterious attack by a group of unidentified persons on Tuesday 3rd November while on his way home from work.
Vijendran’s colleagues, including secretaries and fellow village officers, protested outside the Manthai West Divisional Secretariat on Friday and displayed placards urging that the safety of public servants in the North-East was protected.
Placards such as “Who is the killer?”, “Ensure the safety of government servants” and “Justice for Grama Niladhari S.Vijayendran’s murder” were displayed.
Vijendran was described by locals as an advocate against the illegal sand mining in Manthai West Divisional Secretariat Division and police investigations are taking into account that he may have been targeted for speaking out on these issues.
Local police in Mannar have arrested two persons in relation to the murder of a Tamil village officer at Manthai West Divisional Secretariat.
The husband of the victim’s lady colleague was among the two suspects to be arrested on Sunday by Iluppaikadavai Police.
Last week, colleagues of the murdered officer, 55 year old S.Vijayendran, held a protest in front of the secretariat demanding that the killers be arrested and brought to justice.
