Your Excellency,
Death of Tamil political prisoner Ganesan Nimalaruban at the Mahara remand prison
We the undersigned, political and civil society leaders and activists, assembled today in Colombo carefully analyzed the grave situation that has developed immediately after the death of the above named prisoner early yesterday, have unanimously decided to forward following demands to Your Excellency’s immediate attention and anticipate positive response to ease the crisis:
- The parents of deceased Ganesan Nimalaruban who had been brought to Colombo from Vavuniya by the police, should be freed from the police custody and allowed to have access to the lawyers they have retained
- An impartial enquiry must be held by an independent forensic analyst and a credible postmortem report must be presented in respect of the cause of the death of Ganesan Nimalaruban
- The parents and family members should be allowed conduct a decent and religious burial for the dead prisoner at Nelungkulam, Vavuniya, the village of Ganesan Nimalaruban
Your Excellency, we have been informed by the eye witnesses on the inhuman merciless attacks the deceased and his colleagues received in remand custody during the days following the Vavuniya incident on June, 29th. We also wish to bring to your notice that there are more inmates who have received serious injuries.
Under these circumstances, we consider that the realization of above demands in the case of Ganesan Nimalaruban will help to ease the crisis situation which has arisen today and also grant little justice to the voiceless parents who have lost their only son.
