The charges were filed by former Attorney General Eva Wanasundara, who is now a sitting judge of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka against two young Tamils were dismissed by Colombo High Court on 27th March 2018.
The two suspects, Kanagaratnam Adithyan and Kandawanam Gogulnathan, were arrested by the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) on May 13, 2009. The two men arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) were kept on prison for 9 years.
Two men, who were accused of plotting to kill former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa and former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka, were released by Colombo High Court Judge Sampath Abeykoon who found them not guilty of the charges.
The judge found that the charges levelled against the suspects by the Attorney General were not proven beyond reasonable doubt. The suspects included the son of a former Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP S. Kanagaratnam.
Former MP S. Kanagaratnam was released on the night of January 13, 2010 by the Vavuniya Magistrate.
The Vavuniya Magistrate Alex Raja ordered his release. One of the charges against him was,”refusing government’s order to leave the LTTE controlled areas and staying in the region during the height of the war.” He was released on conditions.
