KANDY: Journalists who covered a meeting at the Kandy regional office of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) were subjected to shabby treatment on Tuesday (12).
The journalists had been invited to attend a meeting chaired by HRCSL Chairperson Dr. Deepika Udagama.
The meeting was due to be held from 10.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.
The media personnel were suddenly informed that their presence was not required and the Chairperson would issue a media statement.
Around 12.50 p.m. the journalists inquired from the HRCSL officials whether the chairperson would make a statement only to be asked to wait a little longer. Having wasted nearly three hours they left in frustration.
Later in the afternoon the Kandy Regional Coordinating officer H.K. Vithana informed journalists over the telephone that they had been invited to attend the meeting as participants and not to cover the event
