[Pope’s visit has become a political issue in the upcoming election]
Bishop Norbert Andradi of Anuradhapura has expressed the private opinion that the tense period following the release of Presidential election results is not a suitable time for the Pope to visit Sri Lanka.
Bishop Andradi states that he is of such opinion because of the proclamation of the Presidential election on 08thJanuary at a time when all arrangements are in place for the visit of the Pope on 13th January.
Further, Bishop Andradi has mentioned that those in authority must consider whether the period of announcement of election results is conducive for the Pope’s visit, and that in his view it is definitely not the suitable time for such an event to take place.
Bishop Andradi added that several Bishops in the Catholic Bishops’ Conference are of a similar view. He further expressed his displeasure over the use of the Pope’s image in campaign posters by certain politicians and their supporters.

ලබන මස 13 වැනිදා පාප්වහන්සේ මෙරටට සැපැත්වීම නිමිත්තෙන් ඊට අදාළ සංවිධාන කටයුතු කල්වේලා ඇතිව සූදානම් කර තිබියදී ලබන මස 08 වැනිදා ජනාධිපතිවරණය පැවැත්වීමට තීරණය කිරීම නිසා තමන් මෙම අදහස දරන බව ද අගරදගුරුතුමා පැවසීය.
