White van abduction in Dehiwala

A person was abducted in a white this morning from the Dehiwela area. According to his family the abduction of B. Dinesh Sanjaya Fernando (35) took place at around 8:00 a.m. today. Speaking to Ceylon Today the mother of the victim Princy Vivienne Mendis said that around 8:00 a.m. her son had gone to the shop a short distance from their home which belongs to his aunt.

“I was having a cup of tea at the time. He came back and had the tea and went across the road a short distance from where I was on Perera place. Just then a white van approached and my son was dragged into the van. He screamed pleading for my help. I kept running behind the van and pleaded with them to release my son”, she said.

In that traumatic instance however Princy had the presence of mind to get the number of the van. “I quickly asked my daughter to write down the registration number which was 250 -1808 and we immediately informed 119 and later the Dehiwela police”, she added.

According to Princy her son Dinesh was without a permanent job, but she was not aware of any involvement in unlawful activity by him. “My son was a person who helped anyone who needed his assistance. He used to paint as a part time job. He has a court case, where he was involved in a brawl. The people of the area loved him as he willingly came forward to help others”, she said. Dinesh has an older sister and two younger brothers.

She added they had lodged a complaint with the Dehiwela police and they had informed them that an investigation would be conducted.

Meanwhile police spokesman SP Ajith Rohana told Ceylon Today that police had not traced those responsible for the abduction nor any information regarding the victim.  He said that the Motor Traffic Commissioner has been informed of the vehicle details, and investigations are currently underway.
