Soon after the Presidential Elections were announced few interested clergymen and lay experts with few invited guests met at the National Caritas Hall in mid-September to produce practical guidelines to educate the Catholics how to vote. basing on the Church’s Social Teachings. The Committee was set up to draft a document and later the document was published as a Position Paper with the approval of the CBCSL Catholic Bishops Conference of Sri Lanka.
With the approval of the Bishop-in-charge of National Caritas, the National Director decided to give publicity in the Catholic papers in all the languages .At the preparatory stage it was almost decided not to be involved in partisan politics and to be independent with the backing of the Catholic Teachings on the subject of politics and common good of the People.
The Caritas has recorded the program was to be relayed on Saturday 19th on Catholic Verbum TV Channel. Unfortunately it is one leader of the Diocese had some objections to this document and vetoed it to be published in that particular diocese. This is contrary to the methodology practiced in the Catholic circles. It is media suppression, the truth has become casualty and the Christian faithful of that particular diocese is deprived of knowing the truth of their faith. Politics is part of the Catholic Social Teachings as expounded in the Gaudium et Spes Document of the Vatican II issued in 1965 Dec approved by the Pope. This is contrary to media freedom and violation of the right to know the truth.
As I was present at the initial discussion I am really sad about this incident of one of the Church leaders of our country. The person responsibility before God is violating the free expression of views which is not binding in faith and morals. The other leaders of the Church cannot remain silent of this drastic act. Further this person responsible seemed to supporting one or other candidate and not able to face position paper.
At this juncture I must also mention the Pastoral Letter of the CBCSL issued in Dec 2013 on the Human Rights Day. After issuing CBCSL the bishops forgot about it and only Late Venerable Maduluwawe Sobhitha Himi gave publicity to this Letter at every meeting. I earnestly advocate the leaders to re-publish the same letter as things discussed are still relevant to the present situation.

සෙනසුරාදා රාත්‍රියේ එම වැඩසටහන නැරඹීමට Verbum TV රුපවාහිනිය ඉදිරිපිට වාඩිවී සිටි ලක්ෂ සංඛ්‍යාත කිතුනු ප්‍රේක්ෂකයින්ගේ බලාපොරොත්තු සුන් කරමින් හිටිහැටියේම එම වැඩ සටහන ප්‍රචාරය කිරීම අත්හිටුවන ලදී.
ජනාධිපති ධුරය සදහා වඩාත්ම සුදුසු අපේක්ෂකයා තෝරා ගැනීමට මග පෙන්වන ශ්‍රී ලංකා කතෝලික රදගුරු මණ්ඩලයේ යුක්තිය, සාධාරණත්වය සහ මානව සංවර්ධනය සදහාවූ කොමිසමේ (කරිටාස් ශ්‍රී ලංකා සෙඩෙක් ) ස්ථාවරය දැක්වෙන ලේඛනය පසුගියදා ඉදිරිපත් කර තිබුණි.
මෙම මග පෙන්වීමේ ලේඛනය සම්පාදනය කිරීමේදී කතෝලික විද්වතුන්ගේ සහ සමාජ ක්‍රියාධරයන්ගේ පුළුල් දායකත්වය ලබා ගෙන තිබු අතර ඒ සදහා තත්කාලීන කතෝලික සමාජ ඉගැන්වීම් බොහෝසෙයින් පාදක කරගෙන තිබුණි.
සැබවින්ම මෙම ලේඛනය වත්මන් දුෂිත දේශපාලකයින් ප්‍රතික්ෂේප කරමින් අලුත් අහසක් සහ අලුත් පොළොවක් ගැන හිතන්නට කිතුනු ජනතාවට පමණක් නොව සමස්ත ශ්‍රී ලාංකික ඡන්ද දායකයින්ටම මග පෙන්වීමක් විය.
මෙම ලේඛනය තුලින් මතුකරන විමුක්තිකාමී කිතුනු ඉගැන්වීම් තවදුරටත් සමාජ ගත කිරීම සදහා මේවන විට ලක්ෂ සංඛාත කතෝලික ජනතාවක් නරඹන වර්බුන් රුපවාහිනිය (Verbum TV ) මෙම ලේඛනයට දායකත්වය දැක්වූ කතෝලික විද්වතුන්ගේ සහභාගිත්වයෙන් විශේෂ වැඩසටහන් මාලාවක් සම්පාදනය කරනු ලැබිය එසේම මෙසේ නිෂ්පාදනය කරනු ලද වැඩසටහන් මාලාවේ පළමු වැඩ සටහන පසුගිය සෙනසුරාදා (ඔක්:19) දින රාත්‍රී 9.00 ට විකාශනය කරන බව පූර්ව ප්‍රචාරණ මගින් ප්‍රේක්ෂකයින් දැනුවත් කිරීමද කර තිබුණි එහෙත් සෙනසුරාදා රාත්‍රියේ එම වැඩසටහන නැරඹීමට වර්බුන් රුපවාහිනිය ඉදිරිපිට වාඩිවී සිටි ලක්ෂ සංඛ්‍යාත කිතුනු ප්‍රේක්ෂකයින්ගේ බලාපොරොත්තු සුන් කරමින් හිටිහැටියේම එම වැඩ සටහන ප්‍රචාරය කිරීම අත්හිටුවන ලදී.
මේ පිටුපස සිටින්නේ කවුදැයි නිවැරදිව දන ගැනීමට අද දින වර්බුන් රුපවාහිනිය ඇමතු විට දැනගන්නට ලැබුනේ ජනාධිපතිවරණයට අදාළ කිසිම වැඩසටහනක් ප්‍රචාර නොකරන ලෙස කතෝලික සභාවේ ඉහලම තනතුරු දරන්නෙක් නම රුපවාහිනී සේවයට උපදෙස් ලබාදී ඇති බවය
දැන් සියල්ල පැහැදිලිය කතෝලික රදගුරු මණ්ඩලයේ බහුතර සාමාජිකත්වය මෙරටේ දුෂිත, වංචාකාර මිනීමරු දේශපාලකයින් ප්‍රතික්ෂේප කලද තවමත් දුෂිත, වංචාකාර මිනීමරු දේශපාලකයින් ඉදිරියේ කොන්ද කෙලින් තබාගෙන නිවැරදි කිතුනු විමුක්තිකාමී මතවාදය ප්‍රකාශ කිරීමට නොහැකි කතෝලික නායකයින් සිටිති. මෙයින් සිදුවුයේ කතෝලික ජනතාවට සැබෑ කිතුනු ඉගැන්වීම් ගැන දැනගැනීමට තිබු අවස්තාවක් මග හැරී යාමය.
