Sri Lanka is reeling from the devastating impact of Cyclone Ditwah, which triggered widespread floods, landslides, and displacement across the island. The cyclone struck during the northeast monsoon, unleashing torrential rains that overwhelmed infrastructure and communities.
As of 29 November, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) confirms:
- 123 deaths, primarily from landslides in central highlands.
- 130+ missing persons, with search operations ongoing.
- 44,000 displaced individuals, now sheltered in welfare centres.
- Major transport disruptions, including blocked roads and suspended train services.
- Severe damage to homes, schools, and public facilities.
The worst-hit districts include Badulla, Nuwara Eliya, and parts of Colombo and Gampaha. Rescue teams from the military and air force have been deployed to evacuate stranded residents, some airlifted from rooftops and treetops.
International support is arriving. India launched Operation Sagar Bandhu, delivering 12 tonnes of humanitarian aid. Other nations have pledged solidarity and assistance.
The Meteorological Department warns of continued heavy rainfall, with risks of further landslides. Authorities urge vigilance and compliance with evacuation orders.
