UNSG ban ki-Moon urges SL Govt. to ensure safety of all Sri Lankans .

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, while expressing his concern on the communal violence that erupted in Southern Sri Lanka, has urged the Sri Lankan Government to take necessary measures to ensure the safety of all Sri Lankans.

“The Secretary-General recalled the Human Rights Council Resolution HRC25/L1/Rev.1 on Sri Lanka that urges the Government to investigate alleged attacks on members of religious minority groups,” UNSG Spokesperson Farhan Haq told Daily Mirror.

He said the UNSG urged the government to take steps to prevent such attacks in the future in line with the HRC25/L1/Rev.1 and added that the Secretary-General was concerned about the reported attacks against the Muslim community.

Mr. Haq said the UNSG had also urged the GoSL to take necessary measures to prevent any deterioration of the situation and to launch an immediate investigation into the incidents.

It was just a few days ago that the President met UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in Bolivia during the G77 Summit and held bilateral discussions.

UNHR Chief Navi Pillay also released a statement on Monday evening, expressing alarm over the clashes that erupted in Aluthgama and Beruwala on Sunday. (Lakna Paranamanna)
