Sri Lankan Navy is blamed for killing Tamil activist ramming into his boat

A protest was held in Jaffna after the body of a prominent Tamil activist who was killed by the Sri Lankan navy was brought ashore to his home village this morning, reports Tamil Guardian.

The reports follows:

Mariyaseelan was a well-known and popular activist, having prominently taken part in protests against the Sri Lankan navy’s land grabs in Mathagal in recent months.

His body was found washed ashore by his colleagues and relatives.

31-year-old Edward Mariyaseelan was killed on Tuesday, after locals say his fishing boat was rammed by a Sri Lankan navy vessel. Though the military has sought to blame Indian fishing trawlers for the death, Mariyaseelan’s family hold the Sri Lankan navy responsible.

As his coffin was brought to Mariyaseelan’s village in Madhagal, locals gathered to pay respects to the popular activist. He had prominently taken part in protests against the Sri Lankan navy’s land grabs in Mathagal in recent months.
