Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Parliamentarian M.A Sumanthiran has sought a criminal investigation against fake news published in three local newspapers.
In a letter to the Acting Inspector General of Police, Sumanthiran says three articles published in three local newspapers had falsely reported that he called on the Tamils to vote for New Democratic Front Presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa in order to defeat the Sinhalese.
Sumanthiran’s lawyers say the reports are false and are a propagation of racial hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence which amounts to an offence under the ICCPR Act.
The Acting Inspector General of Police has been requested by Sumanthiran’s lawyers to take appropriate action, including legal action and arrest those responsible. (Colombo Gazette)
