Sri Lanka: Former Navy Commander Arrested Over Pothuhera Disappearance

Colombo, July 28 — Admiral (Retired) Nishantha Ulugetenne, the 24th Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, was arrested today by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in connection with the disappearance of a youth from Pothuhera.

Police sources confirmed that the incident occurred during Ulugetenne’s earlier tenure as Director of Naval Intelligence, raising serious concerns about potential abuses under his command. The circumstances surrounding the disappearance are under active investigation, with authorities yet to disclose further details.

Ulugetenne, who assumed office as Navy Commander on July 15, 2020, retired from service on December 18, 2022, after completing his official tenure.

The arrest marks a rare instance of accountability involving a former top-ranking military official, and may prompt broader scrutiny into the role of Sri Lankan security institutions in past enforced disappearances.
