Sri Lanka: Bribery Commission indicts Minister’s son over Rs. 275M in unexplained assets

Ramith Rambukwella, son of former Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, is accused of failing to disclose the source of assets valued at Rs. 275.3 million, allegedly acquired through unlawful means.

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) filed indictments before the Colombo High Court on September 12, 2025.

The total assets acquired between January 1, 2022, and November 14, 2023, amount to Rs. 296.5 million, with a significant portion deemed unexplained.

Assets Under Scrutiny

The indictment lists:

Two luxury apartments on Dharmapala Mawatha, Colombo 07, valued at Rs. 80 million and Rs. 65 million respectively.

A Land Rover Discovery worth over Rs. 18 million.

Eight bank accounts—four under Ramith’s name and four under his wife’s.

Legal Framework

The case is filed under the Anti-Corruption Act, which came into effect in 2023, strengthening asset declaration and illicit enrichment provisions.

His role as private secretary to his father, a former minister, is central to the case, suggesting possible abuse of office or proximity to power for personal gain.

Related Proceedings

A separate money laundering case against Keheliya Rambukwella and family members has been transferred from the Magistrate’s Court to the High Court, indicating broader investigations into the family’s financial dealings.
