Social activist Manorama Weerasinghe has been summoned to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Thursday 17th of February, The Morning learns.
Speaking to Mr Weerasinghe today (14), it has been confirmed that he received the CID summons this afternoon and the reason for the summons has not been clearly mentioned on the letter.
“The letter states that I have to present myself to the CID on Thursday the 17th of February 2022 at 9am at the CID office. A proper reason as to why I have been summoned is not mentioned on the letter, although it vaguely states that it is related to a statement I had made. The statement, when it was said or where it was said is not mentioned. I will present myself with a lawyer on the 17th for sure,” he said.
Weerasinghe also mentioned that since he received the summons, many people had called offering moral support.
Earlier today, social activist Shehan Malaka was arrested by the CID over a controversial statement he had made during a media brief related to the Easter attacks in 2019.
