The report is not government owned; it was produced by an independent commission. As a democratic country, a wide range of consultations need to be held before its recommendations can be implemented,” Amunugama said.
“The government is currently studying the recommendations and is considering how best to implement them. However it is undemocratic to expect the Sri Lankan government to implement the recommendations within a short period of not even wo months since it was tabled in Parliament”,the External Affairs Ministry Secretary has further said.
The government is to brief the international community on the progress made with regard to human rights concerns and the reconciliation process in the country at the United National Human Rights Council (UNHRC) sessions in Geneva.
Plantation Industries Minister and the President’s Special Envoy for Human Rights, Mahinda Samarasinghe is to represent the country at the sessions.
He has said that Sri Lanka would address the UNHRC sessions and report on the progress made in the human rights and reconciliation fronts.
