NPP Wins LG Elections with a Reduced Majority and failed in North & East

The National People’s Power (NPP) has emerged as the clear winner in Sri Lanka’s 2025 Local Government Elections, securing  4,503,930 votes (43.26%) and 3,927 seats nationwide.

The party now leads in 266 local councils, including 23 Municipal Councils, 26 Urban Councils, and 217 Pradeshiya Sabhas.

However, the NPP’s vote share has declined from 62% in the November 2024 General Elections to 43% in the 2025 Local Government Elections.

SJB Falls Short of a Comeback

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) finished second with 2,258,480 votes (21.69%) and 1,767 seats, gaining control of 13 councils. However, the party failed to recover from its losses in the **Presidential and General Elections.

SLPP and UNP were unable to regain any ground.

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) secured 742 seats with 954,517 votes (9.17%), but did not win control of any councils. Despite this, the SLPP’s vote share improved from 3% in the General Elections to 9% in the LG Elections.

The United National Party (UNP), led by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, received 488,406 votes (4.69%) and 381 seats, but also failed to secure a single council, marking its continued decline.

ITAK and SLMC Maintain Influence in Ethnic Strongholds

The Illankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) claimed 377 seats and now leads 37 councils, reaffirming its dominance in Tamil-majority areas.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) secured 116 seats and leads in 5 councils, maintaining its influence in Muslim-dominated regions.

– Sarvajana Balaya (SB): 226 seats (294,681 votes)
– Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC): 116 seats (139,858 votes)
– Democratic Tamil National Alliance (DTNA): 106 seats (89,177 votes)
– All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC): 60 seats (75,268 votes)
