Jana Aragala group leader Kumara Mahattaya’s wife, children arrested ( later released)

 Authorities have arrested the wife and children of Premakumar Gunaratnam alias Kumara Mahattaya, the JVP dissident group’s exiled leader.Defence authorities apprehended them at the Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake around 1.00 am today (Jan. 02).

 They are presently under interrogation.

Kumara Mahattaya’s wife Champa Somaratne is a medical doctor and a citizen of citizen of Australia, where she has a practice.

 Dr. Somaratne, along with the two children, was leaving Sri Lanka, where they spent their year-end vacation, when they were arrested.

 They were to take a flight to Australia via Singapore.

According to reports, authorities have now returned the passports of the two children, but are still holding the passport of the wife of Kumara Mahattaya.

Wife, children of Kumara Mahattaya leave Sri Lanka
 The wife and two children of Premakumar Gunaratnam alias Kumara Mahattaya, the JVP dissident group’s exiled leader, left the country last night (Jan. 02) after being briefly detained by the CID.

 Sources at the Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake said they departed on board a Srilankan flight for Bangkok around 9.30 pm on their way back to Australia, where they live.

 Ending a brief vacation in the island, Dr. Champa Somaratne and the two children arrived at the airport early yesterday, when the CID arrested them on information received by state intelligence.

 They had been questioned for more than 10 hours regarding the whereabouts of Kumara Mahattaya, who, according to the CID, was connected to violence during the 1988-89 period.

Kumara Mahattaya’s wife Champa Somaratne is a medical doctor and a citizen of Australia, where she has a practice.
