“I am a democratic socialist, and I will never apologise for it.” – Zohran Mamdani, Mayor-elect of New York

(Sri Lanka Brief/05 November 2025)

In the dynamic landscape of American politics, few figures have captured attention for their bold ideas and unwavering commitment to justice quite like Zohran Mamdani, the New York State Assembly Member representing District 36 in Queens. Known for his progressive stance and grassroots approach, Mamdani has become a symbol of transformative leadership in a time when communities are demanding equity, accountability, and vision.

“New York will remain a city of immigrants, built by immigrants and as of tonight, led by an immigrant, I am a Muslim. I’m a democratic socialist. And I refuse to apologise for either,” he added, receiving applause.

Champion for Housing Justice

One of Mamdani’s most notable contributions has been his relentless advocacy for housing rights. In a city grappling with skyrocketing rents and displacement, Mamdani has championed policies aimed at protecting tenants and expanding affordable housing. His work on initiatives like Good Cause Eviction reflects a deep understanding of the struggles faced by working-class families and a determination to ensure that housing is treated as a human right, not a commodity.

A Voice for Immigrant Communities

Representing a district rich in cultural diversity, Mamdani has consistently amplified the voices of immigrant communities. His efforts to secure language access, protect undocumented residents, and fight for inclusive policies demonstrate his belief that New York’s strength lies in its diversity. Mamdani’s approach goes beyond rhetoric—he actively engages with constituents, hosting town halls and listening sessions to ensure their concerns shape legislative priorities.

Progressive Economic Vision

Mamdani’s economic agenda focuses on fairness and sustainability. He has supported measures to tax the ultra-wealthy, invest in public services, and create pathways for economic mobility. His advocacy for public banking is particularly noteworthy, as it aims to democratise finance and empower local communities—a bold step toward reducing inequality and fostering economic resilience.

Grounded in Grassroots Activism

Before entering elected office, Mamdani was deeply involved in grassroots organising, particularly around issues of racial justice and economic equity. This background informs his legislative style: collaborative, community-driven, and unapologetically progressive. His ability to bridge activism and policy-making has earned him respect among both advocates and lawmakers.

Why Zohran Mamdani Matters

In an era where trust in politics is waning, Mamdani represents a refreshing alternative—a leader who prioritises people over profit, justice over convenience, and long-term solutions over short-term gains. His vision for a fairer, more inclusive New York resonates far beyond his district, inspiring a new generation of civic engagement.

Looking Ahead

As Mamdani continues to push boundaries in Albany, his work serves as a reminder that transformative change begins with bold ideas and community solidarity. Whether it’s housing justice, immigrant rights, or economic reform, Zohran Mamdani is not just responding to the challenges of today—he’s shaping the possibilities of tomorrow.

Mamdani was born in KampalaUganda to academic Mahmood Mamdani and filmmaker Mira Nair.
